As a recent college graduate living in NYC, 21 year old Mark was fascinated by eastern philosophy. He embarked on what would eventually be a lifetime of studies in Zen meditation, the martial arts and mindset training.
At the same time, he worked as a consultant for PriceWaterhouse Coopers. Four years later, Mark left the corporate world for a twenty year career in the Navy SEALs where he led critical missions around the globe.
By 26 it was clear Mark had the makings of a leader. The highest ranked trainee of SEAL BUD/S, Mark served 9 years on active duty, 11 as a Reserve SEAL and retired as Commander in 2011. His leadership of teams was so effective the government tasked him with creating a nationwide mentoring program for SEAL trainees. This program eventually became SEALFIT.
The demand for this learning was palpable. Three more books poured out in a torrent. The Way of the SEAL, published by Reader’s Digest, and 8 Weeks to SEALFIT and KOKORO Yoga, both published by St. Martin’s Press. Writing his experience for others triggered a realization of his own full-circle journey.
In Iraq, Mark noticed that it was not only his military training, but that the power of mental toughness, emotional resilience, intuitive leadership and a healthy spirit were responsible for his breakthrough performance. These skills weren’t solely for combat, they were essential for success in business, relationships, virtually all aspects of life. And anyone could benefit from integrating them. Through Mark’s teaching, entrepreneurial endeavors and travel to foreign countries, he watched people's transformations as they adopted the principles he espoused in his first book and at-home study program, Unbeatable Mind.
At the same time the SEALFIT protocol was born, Divine co-founded Coronado Brewing Company, built www.NavySEALs.com, the leading website for SEAL gear and information, and launched US Tactical, a government contracting business. He also served as adjunct professor of leadership at the University of San Diego before the Navy called him up for duty in the Iraq War.
Mark's many and varied experiences have shaped his direction, but there is nothing that has had a bigger impact on his life than his time in the military. He has seen veterans give everything they have to protect their country, however on their return to civilian life, they often deal with physical, mental and emotional trauma – and it goes untreated. The Courage Foundation was founded to holistically help veterans heal themselves holistically and restore a sense of purpose, hope and connection.
Today, Mark continues to lead, teach, innovate and ideate. A sought after speaker, insightful interviewer on his podcast The Mark Divine Show, and best selling author he pushes limits and minds. A key component of his message is the importance of leveraging technology to positively impact the world. Driven by the passion to transform lives – and to make the world a more compassionate, connected and courageous place, Divine continues to inspire and teach, with a personal mission of impacting 100 million people.
